What is a Peel?

A clinical treatment that removes the top layer of the skin, leading to visibly improved appearance. Chemical peels produce controlled injury to the skin, which promote growth of new skin and improved appearance. A variety of chemicals can be used as peeling agents and include glycolic, trichloroacetic (TCA), salicylic and resorcinol. The different chemical solutions produce different degrees of injury to the skin. Peels are often categorised by their depth: superficial, medium and deep. The deeper the peel the more dramatic skin improvement can be achieved. However, there is also an associated higher risk of complications, increased pain and longer healing time.

Chemical peels can treat a wide variety of skin ailments (including acne) and skin complaints: superficial lines & wrinkles, age spots, pigmentation, rosacea, light stretch marks, dull complexion, uneven skin texture and many more.

Skin peels cause an exfoliating action by breaking up the bonds between skin cells which bind the dead skin cells to the surface. The peel solution induces exfoliation of the epidermis. This causes a mild sloughing (peeling) action leaving behind a smoother, softer skin. In addition AHAs help to clean pores by killing bacteria causing acne, at the same time stimulating the production of collagen and elastin in the epidermis and smoothing out imperfections in darker complexions.

Most commonly the face is treated with a peel.

Your skin will be cleansed professionally and a pre-peel will be used. The peel will be applied, then neutralised (if needed). Serums, moisturiser and SPF protection will be applied. You will be given aftercare recommendations to follow. The treatment usually takes 60 minutes.

Superficial chemical peels are likely to cause a tingling sensation in the skin after the peel has been performed but they are unlikely to cause pain. Medium depth peels are likely to make the skin slightly sore but this slight discomfort can be alleviated by a cool fan or compress to the area of skin.

At Kingston Laser & Aesthetics we use a range of skin peels depending on the best we deem suitable for the condition we are treating. The Award winning Medik8 range and Image Peels are a few of the brands we use.

At Kingston Laser you will have a free consultation where a trained aesthetician will firstly ascertain if you are suitable for treatment, and then decide which skin peel would target your skin concerns best. A patch test would then be carried out before carrying out your first treatment, and your skin may have to be primed with certain products beforehand to achieve the best effect of the peel.

Depending on the peel, this can range from none or upto 7 days. Some redness , (like sunburn) and mild to moderate peeling or flaking may also occur. Your therapist will advise you at your consultation.

No. Sensitive and darker skin types may not be suitable. A full consultation is carried out with a trained therapist to ascertain your suitability.

At Kingston Laser Chemical Skin peels are very safely administered by our experienced and trained therapists. However depending on the strength of the peel you may experience slight discomfort in the form of stinging, redness and irritation with mild to moderate peeling. For darker skin tones a risk of uneven skin tone is increased.

With good sun protection results can last for several months and even years in some cases. This is usually dependent on the type of peel administered – the deeper the peel the longer the results will last.

A course of peels is usually recommended and the number and frequency will vary according to the skin condition being treated. Your Aesthetician will advise you of this at your consultation.
