Skin Needling – ‘roll with the new skin renewal treatment'

"When Angelina Jolie attended the Cannes Film Festival she caused a stir as always. Her radiant skin was buzzed about on beauty boards. Did she have plastic surgery? According to Grazia magazine, her secret - skin needling"
- Los Angeles Times

Dermapen is the latest innovation in treating wrinkles, scars, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, cellulite and stretch marks. Designed to be used on its own or in conjunction with topical products, the Dermapen’s accurate and minimally intrusive penetration allows not only a much higher absorption of serums and creams but has also been proven to stimulate collagen production, dramatically improving the condition of the skin. Collagen Induction Therapy or Dermarolling is a relatively new technology, which combines the ancient Chinese acupuncture techniques with the contemporary mesotherapy practice.

How does it work?

The procedure of using the Dermapen is commonly known as Skin Needling or Collagen Induction Therapy which has been proven to stimulate new collagen synthesis in the skin to restore smoother, brighter, younger looking skin. Numerous, ultra-fine micro-needles penetrates through the epidermis at a perpendicular angle to create microscopic punctures on the skin’s surface using a specialist medical device, for both faster and more precise needle penetration. New studies have shown that by opening the skin in this way there is a dramatic increase in the penetration of any topical product used; increasing its efficacy whilst also stimulating the skin’s healing mechanisms to regenerate healthy skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and scars. . The benefit of a perpendicular treatment over manual angled needles, means less trauma to the skin, promoting faster healing times and shorter down times. Patients treated with the Dermapen unanimously felt that the procedure was much less painful than the Dermaroller and the downtime was significantly shorter. Skin is tightened, lifted and rejuvenated.

Dermapen promotes scar less healing and natural collagen reproduction, similar to fractional laser treatments, IPL, laser resurfacing, and chemical peels, but without the side effects and downtime and can effectively treat hard-to-reach places (around the eyes, nose and lips).

Dermapen is ideal for treating:

  • Fine Lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Surgical, Acne and Trauma scars
  • Stretch Marks
  • Pigmentation
  • Minimising Pore Size

A series of needles penetrate the skin causing thousands of micro injuries at a perpendicular angle using a specialist medical device, for both faster and more precise needle penetration. The benefit of a perpendicular treatment over angled needles, means less trauma to the skin, promoting faster healing times and shorter down times. The gentle penetration of the skin helps release growth factors which stimulates collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin production are essential in helping new skin repair. Also blood flow is improved which all adds up to slow and actually help reverse the ageing process. The stimulated growth also help better skin with reduction in scarring, hyper-pigmented areas, and stretch/cellulite marks.

At Kingston Laser & Aesthetics we use the 'Aesthetic Industry's Number One choice – the Original & Best Skin Needling Device, the Dermapen.' Dermapen is a revolutionary micro-needling treatment, which aims to tighten, lift and rejuvenate the skin. Dermapen promotes scar less healing and natural collagen reproduction, similar to fractional laser treatments, IPL , laser resurfacing and chemical peels but without the side effects and downtime. Patients treated with the Dermapen unanimously felt that the procedure was much less painful than the Dermaroller and the downtime was significantly shorter.

Dermapen® (New Method)

  • Minimized epidermal damage means less pain and bleeding.
  • Easy to manoeuvre around all facial contours.
  • Because of vertical delivery, needles easily penetrate scar tissue without rush of bleeding.

Roller (Old Method)

  • Painful process with more bleeding due to epidermal damage.
  • Difficult to operate in small or curved areas.
  • Difficult to insert needles into scar tissue: needles are easily bent.

Suitable for most skin types, the Dermapen, used in conjunction with quality cosmeceutical skincare products, stimulates new collagen production, leading to a visible reduction of wrinkles and scars, as well as increasing skin firmness. Thickening of the skin caused by regular use of the Dermapen significantly reduces the visibility of broken capillaries as well as uneven pigmentation.

Recovery time: Minimal up to 48 hours
Risk level – low
Skin types – Recommended for acne, scarring, hypersensitive and ageing skin.

Following a thorough consultation, the aesthetician at Kingston Laser & Aesthetics will cleanse the treatment area, then apply a topical local anaesthetic cream 45 minutes prior to treatment. After visually dividing the skin into sections (forehead, cheek, nose, chin, upper lip, eyebrow and glabella), the therapist will hold the skin taught and with minimal pressure move the medical device over the skin using short, back and forth motions, in all directions, (vertical, horizontal, both diagonals). Specific areas will be targeted to ensure the whole localised area receives repetitive needling. The aim is to obtain uniform redness and pinpoint bleeding throughout the skin. The skin will then be gently cleansed and disinfected and then serums such as Hyaluronic Acid, (skin's natural moisturiser) will be applied.

Common effects that subside within 48 hours:

  • Redness (erythema)
  • Scratched skin appearance
  • Swelling
  • Sensitivity to touch
  • Stinging and itching
  • Tightness
  • Minimal peeling
  • Downtime: 48 hours

There is very low risk of side effects because the epidermis is not removed as in chemical peels and dermabrasion. However, there will be some redness, dryness, tightness and some flaking. Good hydration is required.

Benefits of skin needling

  • Visible and long lasting results usually after 6 weeks
  • Natural collagen production for a year (in average)
  • Minimally invasive
  • No skin damage (no removal of the epidermis)
  • Virtually painless (topical anaesthetics can be used)
  • Minimal or no side effects
  • Minimal discomfort post-treatment
  • Can be performed in conjunction with other treatments
  • Short healing time (48hrs)
  • Suitable for all skin types
The actual Dermapen treatment can take just 7 minutes for a full facial treatment but the entire process of cleansing, application of topical anaesthetic & time to take effect, (if required), LED light therapy, (to enhance topical product absorption & reduce inflammation, again if required), and aftercare preparation will take much longer. The Aesthetic practioner will confirm individual treatment times and costs at consultation, but in general 1.5 hours is the time required.

For optimum results, a minimum course of 3 is recommended at 6 weekly intervals.'
